About NRTA

The North Ridge Transportation Authority (NRTA) was established in 1987 under state enabling legislation and a Joint Powers Agreement among Harlan, Ashford, Pine Hollow, and Stanton Counties and their incorporated cities. The Authority serves two roles.

Metropolitan planning organization

As the federally designated metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the North Ridge urbanized area, NRTA carries out the continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive transportation planning process required for the region to receive federal highway and transit funds. This includes the Regional Transportation Plan, the Transportation Improvement Program, and the Unified Planning Work Program.

Regional transportation authority

Under state law and the voter-approved 2016 regional transportation sales tax, NRTA administers the Regional Transportation Improvement Fund and directly delivers regionally significant capital projects, such as the Route 17 Corridor Improvement Project and the North Ridge Mobility Hub.

NRTA does not operate transit service. Fixed-route bus and paratransit service in the region is operated by Ridge Transit, a separate agency. Questions about bus routes, fares, and schedules should be directed to Ridge Transit Customer Service at (555) 318-2000.
