NRTA coordinates the regional Safe Routes to School program in partnership with 11 school districts. The program supports walk audits, crossing guard training, bicycle safety education, and small infrastructure projects near schools.
Mini-grants
Schools, parent-teacher organizations, and local governments may apply for mini-grants of up to $15,000 for projects such as crosswalk signage, bicycle racks, and walking school bus programs. Applications for the 2026–2027 school year are due October 30, 2026.
Services available to schools
- School walk audits led by NRTA planners and local traffic engineers
- Bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum for grades 2 through 8
- Walk and Roll to School Day materials each October and May
- Help identifying and applying for infrastructure funding
Who is eligible
- Public and charter K–12 schools within the four-county region
- Parent-teacher organizations partnering with an eligible school
- Cities and counties applying for improvements within two miles of a school
Funded through the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside and the Regional Transportation Improvement Fund.
